PORTLAND (WGME) — Athletes from across the state will participate in the Special Olympics Maine Winter Games Wednesday and Thursday.
Some of the events include alpine and cross country skiing, snowshoeing and speed skating.
Three-hundred-sixty athletes will compete. Two-hundred coaches will also be on hand.
The venues for competition include Lost Valley Ski Area and Pineland Farms for cross country skiing. The skating is happening in Auburn at Norway Saving Bank Arena, and Edward Little High School will also host some competitions.
According to downhill skiing competitor Clare Patrick, among the most important aspects of the games are the inclusiveness of the organization and the opportunity it provides athletes.
“We can tell our story and tell others who might want to join Special Olympics for their disabilities. So I would say, give people a chance to try, even though some people might have a harder disability, you’ll give them a chance to compete in life,” Patrick said
The weather at Lost Valley Wednesday was almost perfect, clear and mild.
