March begins with cold and bad weather: what to expect in Italy
The arrival of March will not immediately bring spring to Italy, on the contrary, in the first days of the month there will be a phase with a fully winter flavor. A rapid but intense wave of cold, will characterize the weather conditions of different regions of the peninsula, in particular in the center-south. The influx of cold air will be accompanied by a disturbed phase that could bring abundant and snowfall on the reliefs.
Cold air and bad weather: the meteorological picture of the first days of March
According to the latest predictions, the beginning of March will be marked by a cold air from the north-eastern dials. This icy air mass will reach Italy during the weekend and will be accompanied by a disturbed phase activated by a depression on Morocco. This cyclonic system, powered by cold air on the way, will tend to move rapidly towards Sicily, determining an intensification of bad weather on the southern regions.
The encounter between cold air and Atlantic depression could generate intense atmospheric phenomena, with abundant rains and snows on the Apennine reliefs. Although the cold wave is not destined to last long, its impact will still be significant on many areas of the country.
Snow on the way: where and which quote?
Although there are no snowfall in the plains, the snow could fall into different mountain areas of Italy, making the landscape still typically winter.
-
North Italy: The rainfall will be generally weak, but flakes on the bass Piedmont, on Liguria and the northern Apennines, at shades between 500 and 600 meters are not excluded. On Friuli and the Venetian Prealps the snow could go down to the lower valleys, even if without significant accumulations.
-
Central Italy: The snow quota will be slightly higher, around 800 meters. On the central Apennines, in particular between Abruzzo and Lazio, abundant snowfalls are planned, with accumulations that could reach 20-30 cm, with locally higher peaks.
-
South Italy and Sicily: Here the snow will be limited to the highest shares, above 1800-2100 meters, with significant accumulations on the reliefs of Calabria and Etna.
Weather evolution in the next few days
In the following days, the weather conditions will be subject to variations and the intensity of rainfall will depend on the evolution of the disturbed system. Forecasts indicate that the cold could gradually attenuate itself, leaving room for more stable conditions in the second half of the week.
However, March is a month of transition, known for its variability, therefore there are no further winter tail shots before the actual arrival of spring. The next updates will be fundamental to define the areas most affected by bad weather and snowfalls with greater precision.
