Better Man — a fantasy musical biopic that chronicles the career of singer Robbie Williams — is new on streaming on Paramount+ this week.
Directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), Better Man opened in theaters nationwide on Jan. 10. The official logline for the movie reads, “Better Man is based on the true story of the meteoric rise, dramatic fall and remarkable resurgence of British pop superstar Robbie Williams. Uniquely told from Williams’ perspective, the film captures his signature wit and indomitable spirit.”
The theatrical release of Better Man was followed by the release of the film on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Feb. 11. Rated R, Better Man also stars Jonno Davies, Steve Pemberton, Damon Herriman and Raechelle Banno.
Paramount Pictures announced in a press release on Monday that Better Man will begin streaming on Paramount+ on Tuesday, March 11. You must be a Paramount+ subscriber to watch Better Man on the streaming service.
Paramount+ offers an ad-based Paramount+ Essential subscription plan, which is $7.99 per month, as well as an ad-free Paramount+ with Showtime subscription plan for $12.99 per month.
Why ‘Better Man’ Portrays Robbie Williams As A Chimpanzee
When it came to putting Robbie Williams’ life and career story on the big screen for Better Man, director Michael Gracey came up with the unique idea, which is based on the way the singer has often described himself.
“There have been a lot of musical biopics. I wanted to come at this with a different lens,” Gracey told the BBC in a December 2024 interview. “Quite often Rob will say, ‘I’m just like a performing monkey’ or ‘I’m up the back like a performing monkey.’ It just sparked this idea of, ‘We’ve got this chance to tell this story, not from the perspective of how we see Rob, but how he sees himself.’
“And so, I pitched the idea to Rob. I said, ‘You know, if you were to be an animal, how would you see yourself?’ Gracey added.
Williams told the BBC that at first, he thought, “I am a lion’ but then shifted his thoughts to a “monkey.”
“And [Michael] went, ‘Yeah, so here’s the idea.’ And before the end of the sentence was out of his mouth, I’m like, ‘Yes, that, that, that, please,'” Williams added.
Better Man was embraced by Rotten Tomatoes critics with an 88% “fresh” review based on 211 reviews. RT’s Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Daring to substitute its marquee star with a VFX creation and somehow pulling it off, Better Man makes a monkey out of the traditional musical biopic to thrilling effect.”
