The Polar School Ship, a sailboat used by the Portuguese Navy for Instruction, sank at dawn on Wednesday, at the Lisbon Naval Base, in Alfite, in Almada.
In a statement, the Navy indicates that the sailboat “had a rapid water entry, which resulted in its loss of floatability”, being submerged. There are no injuries resulting from the incident.
“All available means were fired, which included elements of the ship's garrison, the Lisbon Naval Base and a team of marine divers,” is explained.
Although “there is no environmental risk,” says the Navy, a team of the direction of combating sea pollution, the general direction of the National Maritime Authority, was also triggered, which, “as a preventive measure, placed anti-pollution barriers around the ship.”
At this time, diving operations take place to inspect the ship, “in order to identify possible causes for their submergence and reflect.” There is no forecast for the completion of these works, indicates the Portuguese Navy.
A process of investigations has already started to investigate the causes of the incident.
The Polar NRP has been in the Portuguese Navy since October 21, 1983. It allows the cadets and aspiring Naval School to have the possibility of “putting into practice the acquired knowledge, especially in the areas of navigation, marinharia and adaptation to life at sea”, explains the Navy note.
