The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly in the process of hiring former Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey to be a part of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s staff, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

According to that report, discussions are “not done yet and the role is being finalized,” but the expectation is that Dorsey will be heading to Dallas.

Dorsey, 43, had a brief NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers (2004-05) and Cleveland Browns (2006-08), appearing in 16 games and throwing for eight touchdowns to 18 interceptions.

He then transitioned into coaching, with roles for the Carolina Panthers as a scout (2011-12) and quarterbacks coach (2013-17). He then served as Buffalo’s quarterbacks coach (2019-21), passing-game coordinator (2021) and offensive coordinator 2022-23).

In his first season in Buffalo, the offense ranked second in the NFL in both scoring and yardage. But the offense stagnated in his second year on the job to the point that he was fired midseason in Nov. 2023.

“There’s been times when we have moved the ball and scored points, but those times, I believe, have become few and far between,” head coach Sean McDermott told reporters at the time. “I can point to the Miami game [in Week 4], which I felt very good about, obviously, we scored on just about, if not every, drive there. But since that Miami game, and really, before that, there were some times when I didn’t feel like we were moving the ball well enough and scoring points. So, it’s just—it’s the whole thing, right? The whole body of work. It’s not just off of two games or four games. It’s the entire season at this point.”

The Bills installed quarterbacks coach Joe Brady as interim offensive coordinator, a role he was promoted to on a full-time basis this season.

Dorsey, meanwhile, was hired by the Browns to serve as offensive coordinator but didn’t have any answers for the poor quarterback play of Deshuan Watson or an offensive unit that struggled mightily overall, finishing 28th in yards and last in the NFL in scoring. The Browns fired both him and offensive line coach Andy Dickerson as head coach Kevin Stefanski restructured his own coaching staff.

It remains to be seen what role Dorsey will handle in Dallas, with Klayton Adams already appointed offensive coordinator. Dorsey had spoken with the Cowboys about the OC role before Adams was hired.
