[Trending News] Calvert County Students Earn Top Honors at Maryland FBLA Conference – The Southern Maryland Chronicle

Students from Calvert County Public Schools showcased exceptional business knowledge and leadership skills at the Maryland Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, held February 6–8 at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor. Competitors from Northern Middle School, Northern High School, and Huntingtown High School earned top honors, securing their place at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California this summer.

The conference offered students valuable leadership training, networking opportunities, and competitive events designed to test their understanding of business concepts. Among the event’s highlights was the recognition of Northern High School’s lead FBLA advisor, Nancy Tassa-Wilt, who was named Maryland FBLA Advisor of the Year. Tassa-Wilt was honored for her commitment to business education and her dedication to student achievement.

One of the most significant accomplishments of the conference came from Northern High School’s Gentry Bowie, who became the first Calvert County student in over a decade to place first in the prestigious Future Business Leader event. This highly competitive category required students to pass a rigorous written exam covering multiple FBLA subjects, submit a professional resume and cover letter, and complete an extensive interview process. Bowie was also named to Maryland’s Who’s Who in FBLA and will represent the state at the national level.

High School Students Advancing to Nationals

Several high school students from Calvert County secured top placements in their competitive events and will compete on the national stage in Anaheim. Ada Marciniak claimed first place in Business Law, while Sarah Hutchinson, Nathan Hitchman, and Sophia Hein earned first place in the Community Service Project. Jessica Nguyen also captured a first-place finish in Introduction to FBLA.

Additional qualifiers from Northern High School include Audrey Randolph in Accounting II, Gentry Bowie, Logan McDonald, and Maddie Thomas in the American Enterprise Project, and Jaxon Jacobs, Tim Wagner, and Holden Lee in Business Ethics. Huntingtown High School students also excelled, with Ihnaya Mason advancing in Computer Problem Solving and Addison Sunderlin earning a spot in Human Resource Management.

Middle School Students Advancing to Nationals

Northern Middle School students also demonstrated their business acumen, securing multiple first-place finishes. Olivia Martin took first in Business Etiquette, Braxton Rayfield won the Career Exploration category, and Emily Oberg placed first in Career Research. Clara Roberts and Bailey Swoope also earned top honors in Critical Thinking.

Other standout performances included Judy Boblane and Jackson Merchant in Exploring Business Ethics, Jordynn Dinkins in Exploring Business Issues, and Garrett Dillon in Exploring Economics. Eric Hitchman won first place in Exploring Public Speaking, while Shelby Howes and Liam Reighter earned first in Exploring Website Design.

Future Business Leaders of America is the nation’s largest student business organization, dedicated to preparing young people for success in the professional world. Through academic competitions, leadership training, and networking opportunities, FBLA helps students develop critical skills in communication, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship.
