NBA superstar and Olympic silver medallist Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season, the San Antonio Spurs announced Thursday (20 February).
The 21-year-old phenom has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, a condition discovered upon his return to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco.
“Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder,” the team said in a statement. “The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco. Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season.”
The towering 7-foot-3 forward, who won silver with Team France at Paris 2024, has been a dominant force in just his second NBA season.
After earning Rookie of the Year and All-Defensive First Team honours in 2024, Wembanyama was averaging an impressive 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks per game through 46 appearances this season.
While his breakout year has been cut short, the Spurs emphasised that updates on his condition will be provided as appropriate.
