Paulo Portas considers that the Portuguese do not want to change government or go to elections, because they do not realize the relationship between the cause and the consequence, but believes there is a solution that would “give people a perspective of stability”: a new alliance between AD and liberal initiative.
“If I were AD I would try to join the liberal initiative to the coalition before the elections. This would give people a perspective of stability. The result, benefiting from the Hondt method, could be very close to an almost majority result and even disabled something else that I think is possible, which is the PS to try to join the free front, ”said the commentator in the“ global ”space of TVI (from the same group of CNN Portugal).
Despite considering that the situation “is not irremediable”, Paulo Portas believes that the latest pythagorean poll to CNN Portugal demonstrates that the Portuguese do not want to change government because they do not see “a credible alternative”. The poll shows that AD, despite losing, remains in a technical draw with PS and arrives falls.
The commentator also criticized the stance of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, for not being directed to the country to “talk about the international situation”, as the French homologist Emmanuel Macron did, and for not “used the power of the word” to give the main “actors of this crisis” “a notion of responsibility” very demanding. And, as a consequence, the country can now become more fragmented, increasing the difficulty of “recruiting quality people” to be part of executives either left and right.
“It is not hopeless, but objectively, even by the survey data that were revealed today, the Portuguese should not want elections, but it does not seem to change government, because they do not see another. It doesn't seem to me to see a credible alternative, ”argues the commentator.
Paulo Portas further insists that “those who had the courage” to disable the political crisis could even “lose the support of the fanatics” of the party, but could gain the support “of most people with common sense”, which are still the majority.
“Most Portuguese do not want elections and do not realize the relationship between the cause and the consequence. The consequence is very disproportionate to the cause. The situation is close to losing control. Each one was climbing a little and sometimes when it is too much the situation is lost, ”he explains.
Paulo Portas looked across the Atlantic, where Donald Trump's “disoriented” economic policy is shaking the world markets. The commentator believes that the economy and the impact on the pockets of Americans may even be the big reason for the fall of the US president.
“He puts, suspends, advances, replaces and returns to postpone the tariffs. This is what happened to Mexico and Canada. It is by tariffs that he can be lost. What makes an American vote is the pocket. All Americans, even in states that do not depend directly on commercial flows, would pay another $ 1200 a year, ”explains the commentator.
