We may not yet know who will be competing for the 2025 Tony Awards, but we now have our first hint at how the show will shape up. This week, it was announced that Wicked star Cynthia Erivo will be taking over hosting duties from Ariana DeBose, who has led the last three awards ceremonies.
In addition to her Oscar-nominated role as Elphaba this year, Erivo has a long history with musicals, and with the Tonys. She took home the award for best lead actress in a musical in 2016 for for her starring role as Celie in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple—she also earned an Emmy and Grammy for her work on the show, putting her well on her way to EGOT status.
“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement about her hosting duties. “I am looking forward to ushering the theatre community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”
Heather Hitchens, president & CEO of the American Theater Wing and Jason Laks, president of The Broadway League, echoed her enthusiasm, saying, “Through performances on both stage and screen, Cynthia has extended the magic of musical theater to millions of new fans around the globe—and that is exactly the mission of the Tony Awards. Her talent defies gravity and boundaries, and we are beyond thrilled to welcome her home to Broadway for what will be a joyful and inspiring celebration of the theatrical artform. We hope audiences are ready to leap to their feet, cry tears of joy, and maybe even get up and dance.”
When are the Tony Awards?
