[Trending News] Lakers, Clippers Interested in Trade for 2x Award Winner

The Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers have already made moves ahead of the trade deadline (though one of them was much more significant than the other), but they may not be done just yet. With the deadline on Thursday, both teams only have a few days to bolster their roster for a second-half push. Furthermore, it seems that they each have interest in the same trade candidate–Malcolm Brogdon.

According to NBA insider Ian Begley, both Los Angeles teams have interest in acquiring the Washington Wizards guard. Begley does note, however, that with Brogdon fresh off a foot injury that sidelined him for a month, it is unclear if their interest has wavered.

“The Lakers and Clippers had Malcolm Brogdon on their radar last month. It’s unknown how Brogdon’s injury affects their interest. Brogdon has been out with a foot injury,” Begley wrote.

Brogdon’s Season So Far

After a season in Portland, the team traded Brogdon to the Wizards in the offseason. The 32-year-old has dealt with numerous injuries this season and has only appeared in 20 games. However, when he is on the court, he is a valuable player. On the year, he is averaging 13.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

In December, ESPN’s Bobby Marks (subscription required) suggested that Brogdon is also a buyout candidate if the Wizards are unable to trade him.

“In Brogdon’s case, if he isn’t traded and the Wizards are looking for financial flexibility, they could entertain a buyout.”

By Thursday, fans will have more clarity on Brogdon’s future. Brogdon does not fit Washington’s timeline and is a free agent in the offseason. At this point, it seems likely that Brogdon’s days in Washington are coming to an end. Where he ends up, however, is something to monitor.

The Los Angeles Clippers Previously Explored Malcolm Brogdon Trade

This would not be the only time the Clippers have expressed interest in Brogdon. In 2023, the Clippers agreed to a three-team trade that would have landed them Brogdon from the Boston Celtics. At the time, Brogdon was the reigning Sixth Man of the Year award winner. Despite having a solid regular season, he suffered an injury that significantly impacted his play in the playoffs. Ultimately, the Clippers backed out of the trade. The Celtics eventually traded Brogdon to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jrue Holiday instead.

Brogdon later said he mentally prepared to join the Clippers, despite the trade never materializing.

“I was a guy that’s viewed as a good vet in the league and to teams. I have good value in the league. So a team like Portland could either keep me as a good vet or flip me. I knew that Boston would be in play to get [Jrue Holiday]. So I did start to mentally prepare to be here [in Los Angeles].”

Following Begley’s reports, it seems that Brogdon in Los Angeles could be an option once again.
